Holiday Road Trip Checklist: Is Your Car Ready?

Holiday Car in Arizona

The holidays are here, and you’ve got places to be. But before you pack the car and hit the road, let’s talk about making sure your ride is up for the journey. Long trips can be hard on your car, and the last thing you want is to spend your holiday stuck on the side of the road.

At Greasers Auto, we’ve got you covered. Book a free 30-minute inspection online at greasersautos.com or swing by our shop in Tempe.

Step 1: Is Your Car Ready for the Road?

Start with the basics—your car needs to be in good shape to handle a long trip. Here’s a quick checklist to follow:

  1. Tires:

    1. Check the air pressure and make sure it matches the manufacturer’s recommendation (you can usually find this on a sticker inside the driver’s door).

    2. Inspect the tread. If it’s looking worn or uneven, it’s time for new tires. Don’t forget to check the spare, too!

  2. Oil and Fluids:

    1. When was your last oil change? If you can’t remember, it’s probably overdue.

    2. Check the coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Top them off or have us do it for you.

  3. Battery:

    1. A weak battery is no match for holiday travel. If yours is more than three years old, have it tested before you hit the road.

  4. Lights and Wipers:

    1. Test all your lights—headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. Replace any that are out.

    2. Inspect your windshield wipers. If they leave streaks or make noise, grab a new pair before the trip.

  5. Brakes and Belts:

    1. Squeaky brakes? Don’t ignore them. And while you’re at it, have your belts inspected for wear or cracks.

Bring your car by Greasers Auto, and we’ll handle all this during your free 30-minute inspection. You can find us at 717 S Hacienda Dr, Tempe, AZ 85288, or call (480) 946-0890 to schedule.

Step 2: How to Handle a Long Drive

If your trip involves 10–12 hours of driving, it’s smart to prep yourself and your car for the journey.

  • Plan Your Route:

    • Apps like Google Maps or Waze can help you avoid traffic and find the quickest way. Pro tip: check for weather conditions, too.

  • Pack the Essentials:

    • A road trip emergency kit is a must. Pack jumper cables, a flashlight, water, snacks, and a phone charger.

    • Don’t forget a first aid kit and a blanket—it’s better to have them and not need them.

  • Schedule Breaks:

    • Driving straight through might sound great in theory, but it’s not safe. Plan to stop every 2–3 hours to stretch your legs and recharge.

  • Follow the 12-Second Rule:

    • Keep your eyes scanning 12 seconds ahead of you on the road. This gives you plenty of time to react to hazards.

  • Know Your Limits:

    • If 12 hours feels like too much, break the trip into two days or share driving duties with someone else.

Step 3: Make It Comfortable

Nobody likes a miserable road trip. Here’s how to keep things cozy and enjoyable:

  • Cozy Up:

    • Bring travel pillows, blankets, and organizers to keep your stuff in order. Clutter-free cars are happier cars.

  • Entertainment:

    • Podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks are lifesavers for long drives. Have them ready before you leave.

    • Got kids? Pack games or download movies to keep them entertained.

  • Snack Smart:

    • Healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, or granola bars can keep everyone happy without the sugar crash.

  • Dress Right:

    • Wear layers so you can adjust to temperature changes along the way.

If your car’s interior isn’t feeling quite right—like a heater that’s slacking or a cabin filter that’s clogged—bring it to Greasers Auto. We’ll make sure everything’s working smoothly before you go.

Step 4: Timing is Everything

When’s the best time to leave for a road trip? Early mornings are ideal—less traffic, cooler temps, and you’re more alert. Avoid driving during your usual sleep hours; it’s a recipe for drowsiness.

If you’re feeling tired on the road, it could be the monotony of driving. Combat fatigue with these tips:

  • Get Enough Sleep: Don’t hit the road after a late night. Rest up beforehand.

  • Take Breaks Often: Pull over every couple of hours, even if it’s just for a quick stretch.

  • Caffeinate Wisely: Coffee can help, but don’t overdo it. Balance it with plenty of water.

Step 5: Stay Safe and Enjoy the Journey

At the end of the day, safety is what matters most. Keep these tips in mind while you’re on the road:

  • Stick to the speed limit and pay attention to road signs.

  • Use the 12-second rule to stay aware of what’s ahead.

  • Keep a safe following distance, especially in holiday traffic.

And if something doesn’t feel right with your car—a weird noise, a warning light—don’t ignore it. Call us at (480) 946-0890 for advice or to schedule an emergency check-up.
